Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, recently outlined a series of internal changes designed to speed up the company’s AI advancements. The restructuring brings key teams and leaders together to better align efforts across AI-driven projects.
One major shift involves the team behind the Gemini app, now reporting to Google DeepMind, led by Demis Hassabis. Pichai emphasized that this move will enhance collaboration, allowing for quicker model deployment and improved feedback loops for the Gemini app.
Additionally, Google’s Assistant teams, responsible for device and home experiences, will now be part of the Platforms & Devices division. This consolidation is aimed at fostering a unified approach to the company’s AI-powered smart home technologies.
In a significant leadership change, Prabhakar Raghavan, a Google veteran of over a decade, will assume the role of Chief Technologist. Raghavan’s contributions include pioneering efforts in Google’s AI features, such as Smart Reply and Smart Compose. Nick Fox, who has long been part of Raghavan’s leadership team, will step into the position of Senior Vice President of Knowledge & Information (K&I).
Fox’s expertise spans multiple areas, including Search, Assistant, and other core Google products. His leadership in shaping Google’s AI strategy has been a cornerstone of the company’s growth in these fields.
Google’s AI innovations continue to expand, with recent updates such as NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews, new tools in Search and Lens, and the launch of an AI-driven Google Shopping platform. The company is also making strides in healthcare, having screened 600,000 patients for diabetic retinopathy using its AI system. This technology is expected to reach more regions, particularly in India and Thailand.
Pichai reiterated the importance of streamlining the company’s structure to accelerate progress, noting that AI is evolving at an unprecedented rate.
